Derocher group September 5-12

Derek and the guys caught some nice fish. Not as many big pike as they usuallly catch but plenty of 35 - 40 inchers. They found a few spots where the walleye were stacking up waiting for the fall whitefish run. one down past middle narrows, the other by Ferret bay. Both spots produced the entire week with many walleye over 26 inches and several pike over 40 inches.

Remember the water was about 2-3 feet above normal and the weather was much warmer than usual so the water temp wasn't nearly as low as usual. We were catching walleye by the hundreds in 4-8 feet of water.




I had discovered a small lake that we could get into with the high water.
(I also went into another small lake with Ed Janz that produced several pike over 40 inches and several hundred walleye per day - scroll down for that story)
Derek, Jim and the guys went in a few days and caught over 400 hundred walleye each day and several 40 inch pike including a 43 inch beauty.
They said it was the best walleye fishing that they have ever seen in 20 years fishing all over Canada.

They were fortunate enough to see this Caribou swimming and get close
enough for some great photos. Plus they saw a cow moose. Nungesser Lake is one of the few places in the world where you can see Woodland Caribou on a farely consistant basis.

We went on our traditional Christmas tree hunt about mid december. In years gone by we typically braved -30 temps and struggled through knee high snow. This year the fabulous weather we had in September , Oct and Nov, continued into December. The temps were about zero ( 32 farenheit) we pulled the truck up within 30 feet of our quarry. We didn't hardly get the toes of our boots covered with snow.
however seeing as it was going to be an easy task Debra upped the anti. She picked out a tree about 50 feet tall and 20 feet across. I talked her into a little bit smaller version.

We always stop to roast a few marshmallows and hotdogs.
good to practice the wilderness survival skills.
No firestarter allowed. Well maybe some newspaper.



We cut a hole in the ceiling so we had a tree in both the upstairs and
downstairs living rooms. ( just kidding)
with the warm weather the branches folded nicely so I could force it thru the door
and down the hall.
this would never have worked on our typical -30 winters.
the frozen branches would have snapped off.


Deb and the kids did an excellent job decorating it.
Mom and dad were up until 3 am wrapping christmas presents.
got to sleep just before santa arrived.
Hayden was up at 6 am .
He was sure to wake mom up every 10 minutes just in case she forgot it was christmas morning.
Both Seanna and Hayden are at the age that they really enjoy christmas.
All in all it was a fabulous christmas.
We are all looking forward to a great 2010.

Hayden had some fun
he drove himself , (followed closely by dad) over six miles
down the lake. found the spot (knew how to miss the rocks) anchored up
and within 15 minutes had a 41 inch pike thrashing by the boat.

People often ask how the fishing is in August. Most of the biggest Pike and Walleye of the year are caught in July and August. The weather is stable, the fish are in set locations. They are more active and fight harder. They are well fed, fat and happy. I have several articles on midsummer pike fishing on our website www.anglerskingdom.com. The articles get into serious detail on methods, location, strategy, fishing tackle, equipment etc.
Pauls pike hit a bulldog he was casting into about 7 feet of water and slowly retrieving out into about 12 feet of water. We had only been fishing for about 5 minutes and were only a five minute boat ride from camp. It doesn't always happen or happen that quickly but if you keep fishing in th right spot you will eventually be there at the right time. A few days ealier I was guiding another group in that same exact spot. I always put out small dark colored markers. I had a very large pike grab a small walleye and although I had 30lb power pro I had been experimenting with a 4 foot flourocarbon leader to increase the number of walleye. (it did increase walleye bites) However the pike bit me off after about 5 minutes. Although I hadn't seen the pike, I shared with my other guests that a large ( 45" plus) pike was in the area. We came straight to the exact spot that morning and it worked beautifully. Whether it was the same fish isn't positive but that scenario has worked for me many times over the years.



Although I don't get excites much when I catch a humongous pike for myself. I've always appreciated any of my guest catching a trophy pike of this immense size in particular young people. (check out 12 yr old Keith Bateman's 49 inch behemoth). However Paul has put in his time and fishing all over Canada for over 20 years in search of a truly giant pike. (Unfortunately he hadn't come to Anglers Kingdom sooner). This was his first morning fishing with us.
It was nice to see that Paul truly appreciated what a marvelous fish he caught. Congratulations Paul on the fish of a lifetime and a great accomplishment.





First rule of fishing - GO WHERE THE FISH ARE
Nungesser lake holds an unusual number of high end (over 46 inch) pike.
It is also one of the best walleye lakes in Canada and I've fished over 400 lakes across Canada.
The 2nd rule is "fish for big fish" this seems like a simple statement but there is a huge number of things that will increase your odds of success. I try to share as much info as I can with my guests, while it is no guarantee, it has definitely increased their success rate.

the Leonovitz family 3 generations of anglers.

The Leonovitz family have been visiting Anglers Kingdom since we began.
They have consistantly had great visits, shared great family memories and caught lots of fish. This past July was no exception.














I recall Pete telling me on their last evening they didn't come in for dinner because they had found a huge school of very large walleye near the Sand Flats and didn't want to leave them. And besides it was just too beautiful out there on the water with family.

No Snow Yet

It's December 16 and we haven't received more than a few inches of snow.
temps have been hitting minus 30 at night for a few days.
should be making good ice on the lakes.
its always best when we get good cold weather for a few weeks before we get snow.
allows the ice to freeze thick enough before the weight of the snow pushes the ice down and water flows on top which makes slush and the snow keeps it from freezing.

September 12-19

Ed Jantz and the guys from the chicago fire department visited.


Had a pretty good week.
About a dozen big pike biggest was 44 inches.
weather was perfect all week.
maybe even too nice.
Some groups in camp found good numbers of decent pike in the little to the north of camp.




































Found some big pike in the little lakes in 5-8 feet of water.
The biggest pike from the main lake were in about 12-18 feet of water
near the staging area for ciscoes and whitefish which will spawn in the shallow
bays. It took a bit to find the areas that held fish. No fish bay had a produced a few but wasn't really ready. Walleye point and the islands in front of Ferret Bay held a lot of big pike and walleye. These areas continued to hold good numbers of fish right into October.
It seemed like everyday we could count at least one pike grabbing our walleye.
One day Dennis and I had 6 big pike grab walleye.


Simple orange jig 1/4 oz with a shiner produced several dozen big walleye.
spinner rigs also worked well.

SEPTEMBER 5-12

Clay , Paul and Jeff Coleman and I had a great day.
We caught over 500 walleye and Jeff was casting for pike all day. Jeff caught his largest pike ever a beautiful 41 inch pike.
nice and thick and healthy. Paul and Clay tag teamed a nice 39 inch pike on a spinner rig.
Clay was like a poet. He came out with so many good quotes I wish I had written them all down. The best was when Clay said "I'm getting worried. I've said so many times over the past 30 years that if I ever had a day like today then I'd be ready to go. Maybe I already went."

I've had times when we caught fish fast and furious for maybe an hour but today it's been non stop for 7 hours and never such nice size and never in 5-8 feet of water and it's september. This is by far the best day - week of fishing I've ever had or ever heard of anyone having.
Nobody is going to believe we caught over 500 fish in one day. We caught more fish today than we've caught in the past 10 years at the place we used to go.
